This free pattern is for a simple crochet lace muffler that will fit an adult, but can easily be adapted to other shapes and sizes with the instructions and information given.

Please note that the pattern is a first draft and has not been officially tested other than by me! If you find any errors or have any suggestions for improvements, please message to through Ravelry.

This pattern is for a rather unfashionable item – a muffler. Now whilst the muffler might not be the height of fashion, it is the height of practicality and versatility – it’s the perfect size to fit inside your coat or jacket with none of the additional bulk that you get with a scarf, and it can be arranged and fastened (or not) in many ways.

This crochet pattern is suitable for a confident beginner and the instructions and guidance have been written with them in mind. If you’ve mastered basic double and treble crochet stitches and can work to a consistent tension, you should be able to easily make this. Note that I use English crochet terms throughout.

I’ve used Skein Queen’s Floof yarn (in ‘Blue Oyster’ colour) to make the muffler pictured, which makes a soft, warm, light and airy, muffler. This yarn is hand dyed in a variety of beautiful colours, but being artisan produced, it’s not easily available. You can happily substitute for any lace weight mohair based yarn that you like. Rowan’s Kidsilk Haze is a good, widely available, substitution, and if you chose to use that yarn, you’d need 2 skeins for this project. It would also be a great project for one skein of the ‘Stripe’ version of that yarn (now discontinued), if you have one in your stash. The advertised tension / gauge of your sub yarn should be in the range of 18-25 stitches and 23-34 rows.

The instructions in this pattern should create a muffler that measures (after light blocking):

Length of 41 inches or 104cm
Width (measured through the middle) of 14 inches / 36cm

As to tension, this isn’t critical, but my piece worked up at 3.5 fans to 10cm /4 inches.
