Floral Tree Skirt and Striped Stocking by Michele Rose Orne

Floral Tree Skirt and Striped Stocking

Pattern description from Handknit Holidays: “The inspiration for these coordinating pieces came from the beautiful handspun, kettle-dyed Uruguayan yarn used to knit them. The subtle variations of color, the bright floral motifs, and the pewter button closure meld to form a multicultural look--part Turkish kilim rug, part Victorian tapestry, and part Icelandic cardigan. Leftover yarn fromt he skirt creates a fun-to-knit striped stocking, generously sized to hold plenty of goodies.”

Finished Measurements:

  • Tree Skirt: 60” diameter
  • Stocking: 7” wide opening, 16.75” from top to back of heel, 11.5” from back of heel to tip of toe

Gauge:
Tree Skirt: 16 sts and 21 rows = 4” in colorwork chart
Stocking: 15 sts and 20 rows = 4” in Stockinette stitch

Notions: stitch markers, eight approximately 3/4” buttons, yarn needle, crochet hook size H/8 (5 mm) for Stocking hanger (optional).

Notes from Handknit Holidays:

  • The Tree Skirt is knit in 4 separate panels. Each panel consists of 3 pi-shaped segments. Although the Chart appears to be three separate Charts, it is knit as one. Skip the spaces between each segment and continue to the next st in the adjacent segment.
  • Carry colors loosely across back of work for border (stranded method; see Special Techniques, page 177); use separate balls of yarn for each color (intarsia method; see Special Techniques, page 175) for the floral section.
  • Slip markers as you come to them.
