With my love of speckled yarns, I’m always looking for fun, simple patterns that really showcase the beautiful dyework. Flotsam is a simple slouchy hat, featuring fun vertical stripes of eyelets that really does just that: showcases the speckles.

Materials:
Yarn:

LYDIA Yarns Squishy DK weight in Garden Party colorway, 150 yards.

Needles & Notions:
Size US 4 and size US 6 16” circular needles.
Size US 6 double point needles for decreases.
4 stitch markers.
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge:
12 stitches over 2 inches of garter stitch in US 6 needles

Finished measurements:
9 ½ inches from brim to top, fitting a 20” to 22” head comfortably.

Notes:
I knit the brim flat and have written directions as such. If you would prefer to knit the brim in the round, join before knitting the first round and make sure to change even rows to purl stitches to get the garter stitch effect.

Want to knit with a different weight yarn? The stitch pattern is an 8 stitch repeat; feel free to add or subtract if needed! (For example, if knitting with a worsted weight, you would cast on 80 stiches). When you do the decreases, just make sure to divide it evenly among four sections.
