Flower Hat (chunky/ bulky yarn)
Fast to knit with bulky yarn, the hat is made top down, starting from the centre of the flower. The stockinette stitch brim is finished with flexible bind off, and the length of the hat can be easily adjusted. The pattern contains a photo tutorial on crochet cast on around a loop - no crochet skills are required.
Skill level: intermediate
You need to be able to knit in the round, using your preferred method, work increases and decreases.
Sizes: XS (S) M {L}.
To fit head circumference 50-52 (53-54) 55-56 {57-59} cm/ 19.5-20.5 (21-21.5) 21.5-22 {22.5-23.5} in. Shown is size L.
(Sizes XS and S are child sizes: XS will fit a child aged approx. 1.5-4 years, size S is suitable for a 4-10 year old. M and L are adult sizes.)
Finished brim circumference:
40 (43) 46 {48.5} cm
16 (17) 18 {19} in
Yarn:
Chunky/ bulky yarn that knits at a gauge of 14 sts and 19-20 rows per 10 cm / 4 in. Alternatively you can use 2 strands of DK yarn knitted together (the hat in the photo was made with 2 strands of Sirdar Country Style DK, 45% acrylic, 40% nylon, 15% wool, colour 604, damson).
For the best results use a smooth wool or wool and acrylic blend with good stitch definition.
Yarn amount needed: 100 (120) 120 {150} metres/
110 (132) 132 {164} yards.
Gauge:
14 sts and 19-20 rows per 10 cm/ 4’’ in stockinette st, using 6.5 mm (US #10.5) needle.
You will also need:
one set of 6.5 (US #10.5) mm DPNs (or circular needle of the same size for magic loop),
6.5 mm (US #10.5) circular needle, 60 cm long,
one set of 5.5 mm (US #9) DPNs for brim,
st marker,
crochet hook size as needles (US #K) or smaller, and a pen or another round object, about 10 mm in diameter (for casting on).
You might need to use different size needles to obtain
the required gauge. Take time to make a gauge swatch, as incorrect gauge could result in the hat being too small or too large. Adjust needle size, if necessary.
