I had some lovely yarn that was asking to become a shawl. Specifically, a bottom-up shawl so that I could just knit until I ran out of yarn. I tried a few patterns, but there was just no synergy between the patterns and the yarn. Finally, I decided to write my own pattern and started browsing motifs that would work. One named the Lotus Blossom caught my attention and I decided that it was the one. It was a bit more complex than I wanted, so I simplified it a bit, added an edging, and thus, Flowering was born.

This is a bottom-up shawl that grows with each repeat. The setup chart is a bit lengthy, but you only need to knit it once. Then you can launch into the 16-row repeat charts. This is a great way to use up yarn of unknown yardage because you can just knit until you run out, then bind off. Gauge is not critical since shawls are pretty forgiving.

Size is determined by your gauge and how much yarn you want to use. The sample used 442 yards and measures 58” x 27”.
