In Barbara Walker’s Treasury of Knitting Patterns, the lacy stitch pattern in this Valley Yarns Foreground Scarf goes by the humble name of “Lace Background Stitch.” But we think it’s time for it to enjoy the spotlight for a bit. Unlike other traditional knitted lace stitches, the structure here is not strictly formed by increases and decreases, but by a unique bundling sort of action that even relatively inexperienced knitters can perform. Bands of garter stitch help turn this “background” stitch into the main attraction on a uniquely textured fabric.
