Forest Park Junior is the children’s version of Forest Park Cardigan. It’s rugged sophistication in a versatile grandpa cardigan that’s equally great for boys or girls in sizes 2-12. Come KAL with us here.

The textured, slip-stitch (Mosaic) colorwork is fun and easy as it uses only one color per row, there are no steeks, and WS rows are resting rows. The colorwork is sized for the various sweater sizes and options are included for the sleeve motif. The raglan seam detail is also customized for the smaller sizes.

Forest Park is worked top-down and seamless (except for sewing down the sides of the pockets). Stitches are picked up for the collar and button bands to add structure and stability, and short rows shape the shawl collar.

Sleeves are worked top-down and in the round, ending with simple colorwork and ribbed cuffs. The bottom of the pockets are created while working the lower body and then finished later…a fun way to construct a pocket that lays flat and smooth!

The generous shawl collar is worked in a single rib pattern for the smaller sizes and a double rib pattern for the larger sizes.

Instructions are included for how to read the mosaic colorwork charts and there’s also a link to an instructional video. See the adult Forest Park Cardigan here.

INSPIRATION: This design was inspired by Forest Park, with over 5000 acres and 80 miles of hiking trails all within the city limits of Portland, Oregon.

Magpie Fibers Nest: Worsted (100% Corriedale Wool); 210 yds (192 m)/ 3.53 oz (100g) in color Natural Twilight.
Spincycle Yarns Dream State: Worsted (100% American Wool); 150 yds (137 m)/3.53 oz (100g) in color Melancholia.

Other samples used Sweet Georgia Superwash Worsted and Brooklyn Tweed Shelter. Any yarn will work that meets gauge and has good stitch definition. Strong color contrast is best for the colorwork to “pop”. Here’s link to Sweet Georgia’s yarn offering.
