I designed this for my father in Law, who is somewhat obsessed with the Forth Bridge in Scotland. It is about 1.5 miles long and there is a well known myth that the team painting it would start at one end and by the time they had finished it would need painting again, hence the use of the term ‘painting the forth bridge’ to mean a never-ending task. I designed this as my first ‘proper’ attempt at the double knitting technique and it did fell pretty endless at times! The end result does look striking though.
 
This chart is 40 stitches by 323 rows and could be used for intarsia technique instead of double knitting technique. You could also add in more repeats of the spans to make it longer.

I used it with double knitting wool (USA light worsted) and the two-sided double knitting technique to knit a scarf approximately 9 inches (23 cm) wide by 48 inches (122cm) long. This used just under 200g of yarn (100 g of each colour). However the size and amounts of yarn needed will depend on your tension and knitting style.
