Fougasse scarf
The fougasse, a flatbread characterized by its dramatic slits, is a familiar sight in the boulangeries of Provence.
Here is a colorful scarf which echoes its form but offers a twist, literally: it can be converted into a braid using the “mystery bracelet” technique. This ingenious feature provides two distinct scarf styles, which can also each be quickly converted into cowls with the use of magnetic pins.
The pattern features a very simple, three-stitch lace repeat. It is easy to memorize, with no chart, making it an ideal introduction to lace knitting. The result is a reversible fabric with a soft drape. Its restrained stitch design highlights the beauty of striped yarn, making it an excellent choice for showcasing color transitions. The scarf is crafted in three modular sections, which are sewn together in alternating directions for maximum color contrast. This gives an ideal portable project which is far greater than the sum of its parts.
Bon comme le pain!
Yarn Characteristics:
The sample shown uses a superwash sock yarn with long-run self-striping. The pattern looks best with long-run striped or gradient yarns, but could alternatively be made as a color block variant by using a different colored yarn for each module. The yarn does not need to be superwash but should be of similar weight to sock yarn.
Notions:
