I wanted to make a shawl with an interesting shape where once you get the basic concept, you don’t really have to look at the pattern again. I think I did it with this shawl! Once you get the gist, you can pretty much set the pattern aside and get to the good stuff: knitting away.

The construction of this shawl is something I cooked up one night! You cast on the total stitches for the shawl, and create the shape and depth by short rows.

I designed the prototype of this shawl for a good friend of mine who got injured and had to take time off school as a result. It wasn’t an easy decision, and I decided to make her a smooshy shawl as a kind of magic to wrap herself in. She’s a fellow knitter and a big lover of miles of squishy garter and I wanted to make something that was perfectly her style. The Four of Knives is a card about taking a period of rest, a step back from a challenge so that one can return to the challenge later. It acknowledges that taking a break and accepting rest and help is pretty darn hard (which is something that personally resonates so deeply with me).

Yarn:
I love variegated yarns but I often can’t stand how they knit up. JOMA yarns are the antidote to that! They don’t pool, the colours are perfect and the yarn is scrumptious.
This is the perfect project for that one skein of variegated yarn you’ve been saving but you weren’t quite sure where to use.

Main Colour (Grey): JOMA yarn “Sock-a-Rino” in Cyborg (80% superwash merino & 20% nylon, 420 yards/384 meters, 115g per skein), 2 skeins.

Contrast Colour (Green): JOMA yarn “Sock-a-Rino” in Cheeky Ruse (80% superwash merino & 20% nylon, 420 yards/384 meters, 115g per skein), 1 skein.
