From the Fields
The most cost effective option for getting this pattern is to buy my book Beautiful Wreck as an e-book for $2.99. It includes the text pattern for this shawl (without pictures.) If you’d like to do that:
Its here on amazon.
Gauge should be 22 stitches per four inches. It is printed as 38 in the pattern. Exact gauge is not critical.
- Written pattern; no chart
- Simple repeat, memorizable by most knitters
- Test knit and tech edited
- Takes one skein of sock yarn about 440 yards or longer
This year, I’m writing a love story.
It’s a novel that takes place in tenth century Iceland--a place of rugged danger and breathtaking beauty. A world where Norse gods are real and women’s dyepots overflow with lichens and birch leaves. I recently traveled to Iceland to visit thousand-year-old farms and black volcanic landscapes.
Along the way, I started collecting ideas for shawls, stoles and scarves that are related to my fictional farm and the romantic story that takes place there.
I’m designing them over the course of a year and putting them into a collection. If you click on the source above, you can pre-order the collection at a big discount and receive an update every time a new pattern is released. A few of the future patterns are described on the e-book page.
From the Fields is the first.
This shawl came together after I studied how long it takes to clear an acre of grass by hand with a scythe (which is, btw, a lot less time than it takes to make the shawl.) The lace design reflects the shape of wind rows in the landscape.

Thanks to wedewschool for knitting the sample shawl shown, and to Katherine Vaughan for technical editing.
