Knit a table runner, towel or trivet that appears stenciled in fronds—with yarn as the ‘paint’ medium. The pattern is worked seamlessly in mosaic garter stitch, one ‘Frond’ section at a time. Frond sections are written (and charted) in four orientations. Custom knit selected sections until desired size.

Mosaic garter stitch involves garter (knit) and slipped stitches using one strand of yarn for two rows at a time (switching color strands every two rows). If you can knit stripes and slip stitches it will be easy.

The 8-section towel sample used 285 yards from two contrasting colors of the suggested yarn. The pattern uses more main color than contrasting color; reversing the colors for half of the project will use about the same amount of each color yarn (~143 yards each for eight sections). A different knitting gauge, type of yarn, and/or color changes may require different yardages.

Use contrasting solid colors or try a semi-solid tonal yarn for one of the colors. As long as the contrasting and main colors contrast well, the pattern will reveal itself. The pattern provides full written instructions with (optional) positive and negative charts for making useful household linens and gifts!
