The gauge listed is AFTER felting! The gauge I got before felting was about 8 stitches and 14 rows to the inch using size 5 circular needle and size 5 (3.75mm) dpns. I would suggest using circs if you are not doing this for a demonstration in a living-history situation, because unless you have dpns longer than 8”, there will be an awful lot of stitches to keep on the needles at its widest part (the edge of the crown).

The pattern suggests Cascade 220 yarn, and gives “historically appropriate” color suggestions. I used Jarbo Garn’s Bobin unspun Icelandic and double-knit with two skeins, and got a fantastic result.
