CONSTRUCTION:

This bonnet is knit flat seamlessly from the front of the bonnet to the neck. There are two versions: 1) folded-over front ribbing and folded- over neck casing, the latter requiring some seaming 2) simple front and neck ribbing. In the first version one I-cord (explanations provided) is worked then inserted into the ribbed neckline casing. In the second version two I-cord ties (explanations provided) are worked from a couple of stitches that are picked up at both neck edges.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, decreasing, working an I-cord (explanations provided), picking up stitches, binding off, some seaming (for one of the options only).

SIZES:

Newborn (0-3mo, 3-6mo, 6-12mo // 12-18mo, 18mo-2yo, 2yo-5yo)
To fit head circumference up to:
15 (16, 17, 18 // 18.5, 19, 20) inches or 38 (41, 43, 46 // 47, 48, 51) cm
Finished bonnet front edge jaw-to-jaw around face, excluding neck ribbing: 10.5 (11.5, 12.25, 12.5 // 13.5, 14.5, 15.25) inches or 26.5 (29, 30.5, 31.5 // 34.5, 36.5, 38) cm
Please note: for optimal fit, about 2 inches or 5 cm negative ease is built in.
Finished bonnet depth from front edge to crown: 5.5, 5.75, 6, 7 // 7.25, 7.5, 8) inches or 14 (14.5, 15, 18 // 18.5, 19, 20.5) cm

Note: Babies and children’s heads vary a lot in size, so it’s best to go by the child’s actual head measurement if possible when selecting the appropriate size.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 120 (130, 140, 150 // 160, 170, 180) yards or 110 (119, 128, 137 // 146, 155, 165) meters of sport or dk weight yarn.

Size Newborn sample is knit in Cashmerino by Lang Yarns in colorway 15.

GAUGE:

24 sts x 48 rows (i.e. 24 ridges) = 4 inches or 10 cm in garter stitch using larger needle after blocking
Please adjust your needle size if needed to achieve gauge.

NEEDLES:

  • US 4 or 3.5 mm diameter circular needle (or size needed to match garter stitch gauge) in length 16” or 40 cm (length is not crucial). Note: Straight needles can also be used but circulars might be more comfortable due to their flexible cable.

  • US 2 1/2 or 3 mm diameter double-pointed needles for I-cord tie(s).
