ERRATA/CLARIFICATION: In Top of Bootie section instead of “slip next st to left needle and k2tog” it should just say “k2tog”. An updated version of the pattern has been issued in March 2022.

This design is part of the Pure Garter collection.
It is available both as an individual pattern and as part of this eBook.

These lovely, modern, fun-to-knit, stash-busting booties actually WILL stay on! In addition to the classic version with ties, a slip-on version (using elastic in the casing) is also possible, for an extra contemporary feel and added convenience.
Thanks to the generous size range, and thoughtful details, this versatile pattern can be used again and again, for all the babies and toddlers in your life.

CONSTRUCTION:

The booties’ soles are knit flat, then stitches are picked up and worked seamlessly in the round from the sole to the cuff.
A fold-over casing and I-cord ties ensure that the booties will stay on the child’s feet. Note: A version in which the ties are replaced by an elastic is also possible.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Long-tail cast-on, knitting, purling, picking up and knitting stitches, knitting in the round, increasing, decreasing, binding off, making I-cords for ties (explanations provided), seaming (for the casing).

SIZES:

Newborn (0-3mo, 3-6mo, 6-12mo // 12-18mo, 18-2yo)
For corresponding booties’ sole measurement of up to:
3 (3.5, 3.75, 4 // 4.5, 5) inches or 7.5 ( 9, 9.5, 10 // 11.5, 13) cm.

Note: Babies’ feet vary a lot in size, so it’s best to go by the child’s actual foot measurement if possible when selecting the appropriate size.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 60 (70, 80, 90 // 100, 110) yards or 55 (64, 73, 82 // 91, 100) meters of sport or dk weight yarn.
Size 3mo sample above is knit in Cashmerino by Lang Yarns in colorway 15.

GAUGE:

24 sts x 48 rounds (i.e. 24 ridges) = 4 inches or 10 cm in garter stitch in the round using larger needles after blocking.
Please adjust your needle size if needed to achieve gauge

NEEDLES:

  • Set of 5 US 4 or 3.5 mm diameter double-pointed needles or size needed to match garter stitch gauge
  • Two US 2 1/2 or 3 mm diameter double-pointed needles for I-cord ties

NOTIONS:

  • 1 stitch marker
  • tapestry needle
  • optional, if using elastic in the casing instead of ties: a length of 1/4 inch or 6.5 mm elastic band for sewing. Note: Length should be child’s ankle circumference, without stretching.
