In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…and He planted a garden in Eden, and He put the man in the garden, and He caused every tree to grow that was pleasing to look at and good to eat. And the Tree of Life was in the midst of this garden. This account from the Bible in Genesis 2 is what my Genesis Crescent Shaped Lace Shawlette was inspired by. This shawlette is knit in one piece from the top down in stockinette stitch with yarn over increases that form 3 wedges as it expands towards the border. It is officially a semicircular shape, but forms a crescent as you knit it because the ends begin to curve inwards, and it is over 6 feet end to end. The center panel forms a lace “branch” panel representing the Tree of Life, and the shawlette finishes in a leafy border which is knit on after the body of the shawl using the “applied border” technique. I chose to knit it in 2 ½ skeins (220 yards each skein) of Cascade’s DK weight Ultra Pima Paints 100 Percent Pima Cotton in their beautiful variegated Mossy Mix shade to further my garden theme. Please note that I cannot guarantee the finished size will be big enough on this shawlette unless it is worked in cotton or mostly cotton blend yarn since it will not stretch out as much as mine did when blocked. I include complete row counts for the body of the shawlette in the pattern even though you are simply working from place marker to place marker with the exception of a small center panel of lace (chart included). Genesis made in this yarn is machine washable, delicate cycle & re-pin flat to dry. It is lightweight, stunning, and a great way to get back to your roots.
