Crisp cotton knit into a cheerful gingham plaid is the focus of this colorful, washable basket or bowl.

The mosaic technique used to develop the gingham design creates a thick, knitted fabric that has plenty of body, perfect for holding baked goods and snacks (or yarn!)

Color selection of the yarns is key: In addition to white or off-white, select two colors of the same tone but different values. In the bottom sample shown, the darker color is Knit Picks Dishie “Blue” and the medium color is “Silver”. The lightest color is “Swan”. All yarns are held double-stranded.

Other Dishie colorway combinations I have used to create this simulated gingham are:

  • Black, Silver, and Swan
  • Mulberry, Lilac Mist, and Swan (top sample)
  • Jalapeno, Honeydew, and Swan

While I like this design in cotton to provide for washing, it could also be worked in wool such as Knit Picks Wool of the Andes - it would make a great knitted project bowl/basket!

This project requires needles in the following sizes:

  • US #5, 6 double-pointed
  • US #6, 7, 8 circular needles; length 24”

Yarn requirements:

MC (dark color): 115-120 yds
CC1 (medium color): 70-75 yds
CC2 (light color): 40-45 yds
