Pattern Inspiration:

This year, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. The blanket is made up of 60 blanket squares - one to celebrate each of the 59 National Parks and one square to celebrate the National Park Service itself.

A highlight of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve protects over 3 million acres of rugged mountains, dynamic glaciers, temperate rainforest, wild coastlines, and deep fjords. John Muir traveled to Glacier Bay between 1879 and 1899 to witness glaciers in action and substantiate his theory that his beloved Yosemite Valley had been carved by glaciers. His lyrical writings about Glacier Bay changed Americans’ perception of Alaska from one of desolate cold to enchanting beauty, and prompted tourists and scientists alike to visit throughout the 1880s and 90s. Established as a national monument in 1925, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve achieved national park status in 1980 with the passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. In addition to a diverse and dynamic landscape, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve provides refuge for an abundance of wildlife: brown bears scour the coastline for intertidal snacks, seabirds nest on rocky cliffs, and humpback whales migrate from their wintering grounds near Hawaii to feed on abundant schools of small fish.
