Released in 1985 and directed by Richard Donner, based on a story by Steven Spielberg and screenplay by Chris Columbus, this film is set in Astoria, Oregon. in 2017 it was added to the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Living in the “Goon Docks,” a group of kids are about to lose their homes to foreclosure to make way for a country club. They find a treasure map from 1632 in an attic from the fabled pirate, One-Eyed Willy, leading them on the adventure of a lifetime. While on this adventure they’re chased by a family of criminals trying to get to the treasure before they do, and in the end save the day with a handful of the treasure, letting the rest sail off into the sunset.

Worked up on US 4 (3.5 mm) and US 6 (4 mm) needles in DK weight A Whimsical Wood Yarn Co. Glitter Paw DK (75% superwash wool, 20% nylon, 5% stellina) in 1 hank each of Goonies Never Say Die, and These Are the Rejects, I love that this yarn has a subtle sparkle to remind me of the treasure hunt in the film. Cowl takes 200 yds of both colors.

Knit in the round from the bottom up, the cowl begins with an easy garter edging, then moves into the colorwork on larger needles. Featuring stranded colorwork Jolly Rogers, One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship, the Inferno, sparkly gems, roaring seas, and Willy’s watchful one eye, this is a cowl for any Goonies Fan!
