The Grand Marais Hat features a very wide, doubled, garter stitch brim, which just stays on your ears and is very warm. Though you could use other bulky yarns, the Lopi makes the hat very light weight, a very nice feature.

I grew up knitting this hat up in Grand Marais, Minnesota way back in the 70’s. We called it “The Grand Marais Hat”, and it was much loved. The photo of the hat in gray is one of the old hats, and the one I used to count out the pattern.

The yarn shop Tall Tales distributed this pattern for free. It is (I believe) an adaption of an out-of-print Lopi pattern. I offer it free here, just the way my Mom wrote it down on a tiny piece of paper we managed to not lose from all those years ago. (Well, ok, I did add a few more details.)
