When winter sets in hard, you need a super-warm scarf to keep the chill winds at bay. The Grantchester Scarf has a deep, rugged texture that traps the air and helps keep you warm even when the temperatures really start to fall.

The pattern includes two different widths and three lengths so you can either make a short neckwarmer-style scarf or a long wrapping version as a real wind-stopper.

PATTERN INFORMATION:

DIFFICULTY: Intermediate

TECHNIQUES REQUIRED: Knitting, purling, increases, decreases, slipped stitches, and working with long stitch chart or written instructions.

SIZES: Small (Medium, Large)
Width: 20 (20, 28) cm / 8 (8, 11) ins
Length: 120 (150, 180) cm / 48 (60, 72) ins

MATERIALS:

Yarn: Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Worsted weight yarn, 100% wool, 102m/110 yds:50gm ball in colour #23897 Forest Heather x4 (5, 8) balls.

Actual amount used in small size: 166gm/6 oz, 340m/365 yds.

Yarn substitution: To use an alternative yarn, please select a Light Aran or Worsted weight wool yarn with a recommended gauge of about 18-20 sts:10cm/4 ins using 4.5-5.5mm / US #7-9 needles.

Needles: Size 5.5mm/US #9 needles, length 30cm/12 ins.

Notions: Row counter, markers and tapestry needle for finishing.

Gauge: 22 sts & 26 rows:10cm/4 ins in Double Rib (2x2 Rib) using 5.5mm/US #9 needles, when slightly stretched widthwise.

Please note that the scarf is worked in Ribbon Basket Pattern. However, as that pattern is quite wide and long a gauge swatch can be worked in a Double Rib as a fairly close approximation.
