Gruene was settled by German farmers in the 1840s. Those early settlers established an economy based largely on cotton. Today the economy has shifted primarily to tourism. Gruene Hall, built in 1878, is among the oldest dance Halls in Texas. New Braunfels was also settled by German immigrants in the 1840s. It is probably best known now for Schlitterbahn Water Park which has rides, slides, and a wave pool. Gruene-New Braunfels is located just northeast of San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio is the location of the famous Alamo.
