Pattern Inspiration:

This year, 2016, is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. Smart Knits - a knitting group out of Logan, Utah - thought that a great way to celebrate the National Park Service and the sublime lands that it protects was to design a National Parks blanket. The blanket is made up of 60 blanket squares - one to celebrate each of the 59 National Parks and one square to celebrate the National Park Service itself.

Haleakalā National Park is located on the island of Maui and was originally part of the greater Hawaii National Park establishment in 1916 (including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park). The parks were separated in 1961. Haleakalā translates to “house of the sun”, which seems fitting given its tropical location. The park features over 300 plant species that are endemic to Hawaii. This square features the threatened, endemic plant Haleakalā silversword. This majestic plant faced near extinction, but is now a conservation success story. The silversword can live up to 90 years and will produce a spectacular flower display only once in its lifetime followed by death of the plant. Be sure to look up the Haleakalā silversword before knitting this square, since its yarn form is slightly less dramatic.
