Errata

It has recently been brought to my attention that there is an error in this pattern. The crown decreases should read as follows:

Round 62: Knit all stitches (72 sts)
Round 63:(K4, K2Tog) x 12 (60 sts)
Round 64: Knit all stitches
Round 65: (K3, K2Tog) x 12 (48 sts)
Round 66: Knit all stitches
Round 67: (K2, K2tog) x 12 (36 sts)
Round 68: Knit all stitches
Round 69: (K1, K2Tog) x 12 (24 sts)
Round 70: Knit all stitches
Round 71: (K1, K2Tog) x 8 (16 sts)
Round 72: Knit all stitches

Then follow the rest of the instructions replacing the words “Round 70” with “Round 72”.

V4.0 has the updated information.

This pattern uses a soft luxurious feeling yarn, which has a rustic look, to produce an interestingly textured and manly hat. The cables do not detract from the yarn, but prevent the colour from becoming too uniform.

The pattern is knit in the round using circular needles or dpns, and stitch markers and a cable needle is required.

The cable pattern is charted clearly, but there are no written row by row cable instructions.

V3 of the pattern has new clearer charting and additional instructions to deal with problems with achieving gauge.

If you want to learn how to make this hat without using cable needles I have written a tutorial on my blog, which can be found here.
