Snuggle up in this pretty blanket inspired by the traditional everyday shawls of the Shetland Isles. The blanket begins with the centre square of squishy garter stitch worked in a simple stripe pattern. Then the feather and fan (old shale) edging is worked by picking up stitches around the centre square and working outwards in rounds in a stripe pattern that echoes the beautiful shading often found on hap shawls. If this simple example of the basic idea inspires you to learn more about hap shawls, Sharon Miller’s Shetland Hap Shawls Then & Now is a wonderful reference.
