Sometimes the simplest things are best. Stocking stitch (here worked on a machine) shows off a nice gradient beautifully. The construction of the hat adds interest, and the scarf can be tied with an interesting knot.

The hat is knitted in strips and then sewn together using both stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch as the right side.
