This is my second experiment in illusion or shadow knitting. The object this time is to try to extend the basic idea to create shadows, for definition, with the mixture of the two main colours.

I used burgundy and yellow as these are quite close to Harry Potter’s house colours of scarlet and yellow.

The finished size is 83 cm x 30 cm (33” x 12”) but I knit very tightly so yours may come out a bit bigger. I used 100 grams of DK yarn in each colour. Other yarns could be substituted.

The pattern includes the chart at a small size, fitted on one page, and also at a larger size split into three sections to make it easier to follow.

The design could be used in various ways, such as the centre panel of an afghan or part of a scarf or incorporated into the back of a jacket.

One of the photographs shows the Potter Illusion and lettering completed by aknitter609 and the final picture shows the Harry Potter illusion alongside the Draco Malfoy illusion. These are the same size so could form the two ends of the same scarf or two panels of a bedspread.

When you look straight at illusion knitting the picture disappears and you only see stripes.

September 2013 Update
The pattern now includes an extra chart intended for tablet users but others may find it helpful. You can view 20 ridges at a time and always be able to see the numbers across the bottom of the chart. Never lose your place again!
