You will need:
100g DK yarn for background colour – red or whatever suits you
40g approx. cream DK yarn
4mm crochet hook
Darning needle
Stitch markers (can use different coloured yarn)

Useful information:

Techniques: double crochet (single crochet in US), increase and decreasing stitches, colourwork (changing colour), back loop only and front loop only work.
Worked in continuous rounds with no join. Markers will tell you where you are.
