Heartstrings Slouch Hat
A free version is also available.
This slouch hat uses the star stitch (turned sideways) to give the illusion of rows of tiny hearts running up the sides of it. Instructions for child and adult are included, but it is able to be customized to a variety of head shapes because the main part is worked in rows.
*This pattern is available for FREE on my website, (visit pattern website link above), or you can download it here on Ravelry as a printable, ad-free PDF.*
Difficulty:
Easy/Intermediate
Materials Needed:
5mm (H) hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge
Approximately 225-250 yards of Red Heart Soft in “Berry” or color of choice
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Scissors
1” Button (I used Antique Silver Nordic Metal buttons by Belle Buttons by Dritz which appear to be discontinued now)
Stitches Used:
ch= chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
BPhdc = back post half double crochet
FPhdc = front post half double crochet
Additional terms:
Working in the 3rd loop of an hdc: Look at the top of the stitch, and locate the sideways “V”, bend the stitch to look at the back, and you should see another “V” made by the “yarn over”. You’ll be working into the back loop of that “V”, this is the yarn over and is called the 3rd loop. After turning, this loop will be facing you.
This pattern uses the Star Stitch for rows 3 and 4. I’ve included written instructions on both rows.
st/sts = stitch/stitches
Gauge:
14 hdc stitches to 4”
Measurements:
10” by 10” for adult hat
Additional Notes:
-ch-1 at beginning of row or round does not count as st
-This hat works best when using very soft, worsted weight yarn with plenty of drape. Use of another yarn besides Red Heart Soft may give you different results.
