Hearty Steps is the third pattern of the Sock Doodles series. Have you found yourself mindlessly doodling in a boring meeting or in a classroom when you were stuck on a problem? Often doodling soothes your mind, helps to stay focused and think deeper. Sock Doodles were born doodling with mosaic slipped stitches and leftover yarn. Create colourful happy socks using scraps, mini skeins and simple slipped-stitch patterns.

Mosaic knitting is one of the easiest colourwork techniques. The mosaic pattern knits up using just one of the yarns at a time. Work two rounds in one colour, then two rounds in another colour. The remaining yarn is left hanging at the beginning of the round. Knitting involves slipping the stitches in a round that should be the “other” colour.

Socks are worked from toe up with short row heels and a small gusset. Size refers to sock foot circumference. Socks can be worked on double pointed needles, two circular needles or on other types of needles convenient for the knitter for knitting small circumferences in the round.
The pattern uses metric and imperial systems.
The mosaic pattern is charted.

S (M, L, XL) Size refers to the circumference of the foot measured around mid-foot.
Sock foot circumference:

  • unstretched 18(19.5, 20.5, 22) cm / 7 (7¾, 8, 8¾)’’,
  • stretches to 21.5 (23, 24.5 26) cm / 8½ (9, 9½, 10¼)’’

Foot/leg length: adjustable to fit.

Approximate yarn amounts depending on size:
A 8 - 10 g / 0.3 – 0.4 oz. = 32 - 40 m / 35 - 44 yards
B 24 - 28 g / 0.85 - 1 oz. = 96 - 112 m / 105 - 122 yards
C 29 - 34 g / 1 – 1.2 oz. = 116 - 136 m / 126 - 148 yards
D 8 - 10 g / 0.3 – 0.4 oz. = 32 - 40 m / 35 - 44 yards

For the sample less than one 50 g / 1.76 oz ball of a variegated sock yarn and some leftover yarns were used. Use just two colours or four or even six, work more or less mosaic pattern repeats, all is up to you!
