When I took Home Ec, the tomato pin cushion was part of the required sewing kit. I have owned several of these over the years, as had my mother and grandmother. My knitted version pays homage to the ubiquitous tomato pin cushion and to the lovely heirloom (not uniformly round) tomatoes it calls to mind.

The main body is knit of doubled worsted weight yarn. It is cast on and worked in garter stitch side to side in short rows. The green dividing sections are worked in stockinette stitch in a single strand. The leaf top, loop and strawberry are worked in one piece. Tomato body seam is sewn, joined with Kitchener’s Stitch or 3 needle bind off. Leaf top is sewn on.

Size 8 5mm knitting needles (I used double pointed needles due to the small scale of project)
Size 5 3.75 mm knitting needles
Size K 6.5mm crochet hook
Size E 3.5mm crochet hook
Stuffing material (model used yarn scraps bits and pieces)
Yarn needle
