Hemiola is a rhythmic figure in music in which two groups of three notes are rearranged so as to figure as three groups of two notes. It represents the ratio 3:2 and, as a specific type of polyrhythm, results in a syncopated, an off-the-beat perception of the respective music.

I have translated this concept into the knitting language by combining distinct elements that play their role on the garment at different paces, but all of them placed within the interval of a 6-row repeat: colors change every other row; increases take place every 3rd row; and a very simple tuck stitch every 6th row.

The juxtaposition of all elements at different frequencies causes the tuck stitch to become staggered, adding one more texture element to the garment. Hemiola shawl has a triangular shape and it is also all knit in garter stitch which, when integrated with tuck stitch, creates a reversible fabric.

Damasco is a 70%-cotton and 30%-linen yarn from the Ecofriendly Collection of the Portuguese label Rosários 4. I particularly enjoy the heavy drape of this vegetable fiber blend, as well as the cold touch of linen which makes it perfect for summer and tropical climate. The Hemiola shawl is knitted with only 3 skeins of Damasco, being one of each different color. It can also be knit with any other type of yarn.
