The simple slipped stitch textures of the rise of this hat tone down and enhance variegated yarn with an organic softness, whilst the crown transitions to city-chic of an architectural beauty.

This hat is designed for two or more shades of sportweight yarn and would be ideal for two shades semi-solid or tonally variegated, or two complementary speckled or variegated yarns (or of course one plain and one more vibrant yarn). You could also stashbust small scraps of multiple colours.

My sample is a slouchy version. Can also be made as a beanie.

Sizes
Choose a size approx. 7-10 cm (3 ½ -4 in) less than your actual head size for a snug fit or 3-5cm/1 ¼ -2in less for more relaxed slouchy fit (as shown). Shown modelled with 4cm/1 ¾ in negative ease.

Finished sizes:
Age 4-adult S 44cm/17 ¼ in circ. & 24.5cm/9 ¾ in length
Adult M: 49cm/19 ¼ in circ. & 24.5cm/9 ¾ in length
Adult L: 55cm/21 ½ in circ. & 25.5cm/10in length

Shown in adult M on a head circ. of 21in/53cm

Needles:
3.5mm (US 4) circular needle or correct needle size to achieve gauge and a needle 0.5-1mm (1-2 US sizes) smaller for the ribbing. You can use DPNS if you prefer. Pattern assumes magic loop, but you may substitute your preferred method for small circumference knitting when decreasing the crown.

I used smaller needles as I am a looser that average knitter.

Gauge:
22 stitches and 37 rows over 10cm/4 in over pattern st.

Skills required:
Knitting in the round
decreasing
slipping stitches

Notions

tapestry needle to weave in ends.

Yarn and yardage
Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino Tonals (or similar sport weight yarn). Some testers also found it possible to get gauge with DK yarn.
