Learn how to make a double stitch, a provisional cast on, a stretchy bind off, and how to make special button closures. Yarn shops will especially enjoy having this for a teaching project!

The Hillbrook Shawl was originally designed for Swing Knits® as a teaching design for The Knitting Boutique link text who sponsored a fabulous retreat at the beautiful Hillbrook Inn, in Charles Town, WV. The teaching pattern was presented last September with three colors of The Knitting Boutique’s custom DK yarns, Severn and Sassafras. See photos of the light gray, amethyst, and variegated yarns.

Urth Yarns link text featured my Streamlines shawl on their website. They contacted me to suggest another design that would feature their beautiful yarns. Hillbrook Shawl was a good choice for a two yarn project which colors they selected for this project.

Hillbrook Shawl was rewritten from the Swing Knits® teaching version to include all knitters. There are three patterned areas written out in detail.

  1. The first section of the pattern begins with a provisional cast on. The area includes three sets of short rows, two that “move” to the right, and one in the middle that moves to the left.
  2. The second section is an alternating eyelet pattern of which the “eyes” are divided with a garter ridge rows.
  3. Lastly the third section has “mini” short rows to create an interesting border design.

The pattern allows the knitter to become creative with their own imagination. Some possibilities allow the pattern to be transformed from a shawl into a poncho with removable buttons, scarf, head scarf, or wrapped cowl. See photos. By manipulating the shawl to have repeats of the areas, it can be lengthened to become a throw or baby blanket. The possibilities are endless.

Finished size is approximately 62” x 18”
