When knit horizontally, scarves take on a graceful look even when worked in heavier weight yarns. Since you are knitting the scarf lengthwise instead of widthwise, you must decide ahead of time how long you wish your scarf to be. Knit a swatch to check your gauge, then cast on the necessary number of stitches to achieve the desired length. Use an extra-long circular needle to accommodate the large number of stitches (150 to 200). It may take a while to work your way across a row, but before you know it, the scarf will be the width you want and you’ll be finished.
