A crochet house for mice, hamsters, gerbil and other small animals – or for a toy animal if you use yarn instead of twine.

Can be worked up in about an hour.

Important Note:

If you are making this for a life animal, keep in mind that they will gnaw on it and pull strands of fibre out. Therefore only use twine, undyed and unbleached organic cotton or organic wool or T-shirt yarn that you made yourself from old, often washed shirts.

Dyes, bleach or other chemicals used on yarn might be toxic for such a small animal when eaten and fibre strands from artificial yarns like acrylic might wrap around a leg or tail and cut off blood flow because they don’t tear easily.

Sizes:

animal house: Diameter 3.5 to 4 inches, height about 7 inches
toy house (small): Diameter 2.5 to 3 inches, height about 5 inches
toy house (big): Diameter 3.5 to 4 inches, height about 6.5 inches

Materials:

animal house:
40 m (44 yds) of thicker twine (about 3-4 mm thick)
7 mm crochet hook

toy house (small):
35 m (38 yds) of bulky weight yarn
6 mm (US size J) crochet hook

toy house (big):
45 m (50 yds) of super bulky yarn
8 mm crochet hook – depending on your yarn, you might have to go up in hook size, please refer to the ballband as super bulky seems to vary a lot
