The design for the Hurst hat came about after spending an autumn afternoon on our local meadow, with the hawthorn bushes full of small red berries. The band of colourwork gives a double thickness of warmth around the ears, just what is needed at this time of year.

One size is given (adult/teen). I knitted it in Snaeldan 2-ply yarn, a pure wool fingering-weight yarn that I love; I used less than 35 g and 20 g of the two undyed background colours, and less than 10 g each of the green and the red.

Tension: 27 sts = 10 cm.
