This hyperbolic scrumble motif can be used on its own (think ‘earrings’ in a fine crochet cotton thread) as an applique embellishment, or can be included with other scrumbles and more motifs to make a whole-cloth freeform piece.

My tutorial includes a couple of rounds in the center that are flat (before the frilly bit starts) so that the motif is easier to join to other scrumbles.
