Illusion knitting appears to be simple stripes when you see it straight on, but shows a clever raised design when you look at it from an angle. The secret is the placement of knit and purl stitches. On the right side of this fabric, purl stitches will rise up while knit stitches recede. The chart is written with notation that shows what the stitches will look like on the right side of the coaster, while the written instructions will tell the actual stitch you will make. This means that a stitch that shows as a purl on the chart will be a stitch that you knit on the back side, and a stitch that shows as a knit on the right side will be a stitch that you purl on the back side. All odd numbered rows will be worked as knit on the right side of the fabric. The even numbered rows, worked on the wrong side of the coaster, will have the mixed knit and purl stitches that give the raised design.
