Ingveld is a riff on the traditional Shetland hap shawl. The garter stitch body is worked sideways on the bias. Then stitches are picked up around the sides for the lace. It is finished with an edging with true lace (patterning on every row).

The yardage for this shawl can vary widely. The brown shawl used approximately 900 meters of yarn, whereas the speckled shawl used only 600 meters.

This shawl is part of my collection Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places visited & settled by the Vikings. Ingveld/Yngvild was the wife of Ketil Flatnose, who ruled the Hebrides in the 9th century. To commemorate this Hebridean heritage, the original shawl was knitted in St Kilda Laceweight.
