The women of Inis Meáin, one of the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland, have a distinctive style of traditional shawl which has been captured beautifully in this image by David Shaw-Smith in his book ‘Traditional Crafts of Ireland’.

I couldn’t find a pattern exactly like that in the photo, so decided to try to copy the design as best I could myself. It is basic but I am happy to share the results with you.

Yarns required 1 x 100g ball of each of 10 colours, specified in the pattern: Gorse Yellow, Sky Blue, Deep Sea Blue, Milkmaid Pink, Burren Grey, Crocosmia Red, Lichen Green, Primrose Yellow, White Wash, Slate Black.

4.5mm hook is used throughout.

The different DK brands I used were all 100g balls with a gauge of 28 rows and 22 sts over 10cm square. All were between 280 and 300 metres yardage. You will find however that you have a fair bit of each ball left over.
