Inlaid Braids by Helen Gipson

Inlaid Braids

There is an Estonian colour work technique called Roositud inlay where you “embroider as you knit”. These socks do the same but in a very different manner with no stranding of yarn across the back. If it wasn’t for having to weave in the ends they are almost good enough to wear inside out.

The technique is simple to work to produce this complex looking design of two 3-colour braids which share the middle stitches.

As well as the main colour you will need up to 28 yards/26 m in each of 3 contrast colours.

Any ‘normal’ sock yarn/gauge - select the stitch count and heel instructions based on your gauge for plain vanilla socks - the colour work does not affect the stretchiness.

The pattern has full written instructions and the colour work pattern is also charted. There are separate pdfs for toe up and cuff down.
