The pattern PDF contains several motifs associated with the University of Iowa.

They were developed for a doubleknit scarf which ended up being more than six feet long. By omitting or repeating motifs along with extending or shrinking the argyle pattern, it is possible to make a scarf of most any length.

Beginners at doubleknitting may want to stick to the motifs that are totally reversable - IOWA, Tigerhawks, and Old Capitol. The HAWKEYES and ANF motifs are a little trickier in that each pattern row needs to be read in one direction for the knit stitches and in the other direction for the purl stitches.

A tip for scarf knitters: knit the motifs from the bottom up for the first half of the scarf and from the top down for the second half. That way they will be recognizable when hanging around the neck.

The motifs can easily be adapted for mittens, hats, sweaters, etc.
