Know what’s scary? Designing and releasing your first knitting pattern is!
In March of 2016, it took a lot to hit publish and release a creative idea into the wild when I went to release Irish Whiskey, but I’m so glad I did. I’ve learned a lot about knitwear design and pattern writing over the years, and I’m forever grateful for the urging and support I had from those around me who encouraged me to write my first one. The incredible journey it set me on has been truly fascinating. Irish Whiskey will forever hold a special place in my heart as my first big plunge into knitwear design.
Worked in the round, Irish Whiskey contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for a peasant heel (afterthought heel using scrap yarn), but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using (links included for alternatives).
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer (ensure you denote your instep stitches with extra markers – so you don’t miss the placement of the heel or toe shaping).
This sock pattern shines well with solid, semi-solid, self-striping, or lightly variegated/speckled yarns. Picking an appropriate yarn for this project will ensure your yarn and the cables aren’t competing to be the star.
