When my daughter was born, Jana, an elderly Dutch woman, gifted my daughter a simple, wrap top that tied on the inside and buttoned on the outside. As an infant, the top was an extra layer of warmth that wrapped about her on cool summer evenings. As she grew the top stayed with her, at nine months it was a sweater, at twelve months it was a sweater vest. It was her favorite garment and when told to grab a sweater this top was what she held out. At two years old it was a shrug that stretched across her chest. Now twenty years later I recreated the baby wrap top from memory. The baby wrap is knit flat, from the top down using raglan shaping, M1R and M1L increases, purled sleeve edges and a decorative bind off for the body.

Size: newborns through twelve months, or whenever it ceases to fit.
