All squares are worked back and forth on size 6 (4.0 mm) needles. Each square begins with 8 rows of cable border. These rows are not counted as part of the pattern or chart. The patterns are then knit over the center stitches with the first and last 8 sts always worked in cable border. Most of the squares are worked over 82 total sts, increasing for the main pattern, but be sure to read each set of directions carefully. The patterns are repeated until the square is approximately 11” in length and then finished with 8 more rows of cable border (12” in total length). It is better to finish the square a little short of 12”, rather than longer, and block it to the appropriate size.

Note: The charts are read from right to left on the right side and left to right on the wrong side.

Strips: If you choose you can work the afghan in 3 strips, direction for strips are given in each pattern.

Tip: for a neater edge and easier grafting at the end of the project, always slip the first st of every row as if to purl with the yarn in front. Then put the yarn to the back and begin knitting the pattern.

Finishing: Block each piece to 12” x 12”. You can put your squares together in whatever order you wish. Lay them out on a table to help you decide how to put them together. Once you have decided on your final layout, attach the squares together by sewing the bottom of one square to the top of another and then the bottom of that square to the top of the next and then the bottom of that square to the top of the next. Set aside. Repeat this process twice more for the other squares. You now have three strips of four squares each to bind together. Bind the sides together being careful to not leave a hole at the corners. Weave in all ends.
