You start your mitts or mittens by knitting the cuff flat then joining the provisional cast-on edge to the live stitches with kitchener stitch to create your circular cuff. Then orient the cuff to have the part of the cable pattern you want to face out and pick up stitches with 2 circular needles to knit the hand and gusset of your mitts in the round. We have a typical thumb gusset and a 1by1 or 2by2 rib to finish up the tops of the mitts/thumbs. So I could knit the gusset on the same side for the right and left mitt I made sure to have the opposite side of the cuff facing up when I picked up the stitches on the second mitt I knitted. This makes both of the mitts reversible so you can wear them on either hand with whichever side of the cable cuff pattern facing out that you’re in the mood for :) I’ve also including directions for finishing the mitts into mittens for those of you that like to cover your fingers too.
