Knit, purl and slip stitches create a stylish and reversible art deco design. Knit a cosy scarf, cowl or buttoned cowl in a soft and squishy yarn for the man, woman or child in your life.

The plain cowl is a great project for an adventurous beginner wanting to try knitting in the round. The stitches are just a mixture of knits, purls and slips. The buttoned cowl and scarf use the same easy combination of stitches but are knit back and forth with a crafty i-cord edging that you might not even realise you are knitting!

The pattern is wonderfully unisex - the strong geometry will appeal to many men, as well as stylish women, but you won’t get bored knitting it.

The cowls in particular are great for last-minute gift knitting - once you know the pattern you could even make one in just a few hours.

And remember, it takes as much effort to knit with crappy yarn as it does with something gorgeous, so treat your knitting fingers and intended neck to something soft and squishy. I recommend choosing a yarn that will block well, have great stitch definition and feel great. I used Madelintosh Tosh Vintage and Bendigo Woollen Mills Luxury 10ply in the samples, but check out the project pages for other great ideas.
