Kaiburr is a fun and easy fingerless mitts pattern that shows off self striping yarn with multi-directional knitting. With a little extra planning, you can place your favorite stripe on the center of the thumb, or place one red and one blue to express both your light and dark sides. What color is your Kaiburr?

The hand of these mitts are worked from the fingers down, with a thumb gusset that is worked side to side from stitches picked up on one side of the hand and grafted to the edge of the other side. After the thumb gusset is completed, the cuff is worked in the round.

For a longer hand, knit an extra inch (or more) after hand decreases are complete.

To place the red and blue stripes (or any specific color) along the center of the thumb, start picking up thumb gusset stitches with yarn about 25 (33) ft / 762 (1006) cm prior to the midpoint of the color section you want to be centered (Note: If you knit a longer hand, you should include 1 ft / 30 cm extra yarn for every additional 4 rows of hand length). This is an approximate measurement, and your stripe placement may vary slightly due to gauge differences, but if your stripe is off center by a row or two, it won’t be very noticeable when wearing the mitts. This extra step is purely optional as the mitts look great with random stripes as well.

sizes 7 (8)” finished hand circumference, about 6 (7)” from top to cuff with edges rolled.

yarn Must Stash Yarn Perfect Sock; 440 yds per 100 g; 75% Superwash Merino Wool / 25% Nylon. 1 Must Match Skein or approx. 170 (226) yds / 155 (207) m fingering weight yarn. Shown in Anakin colorway.

A Must Stash Yarn Must Match set of two matching 50 g skeins makes matching your mitts a breeze. However, I was able to make a matching pair with just one 50 g skein by keeping careful notes on where in the color repeat I started.

needles Size 1 US / 2.25 mm needle as preferred for small circumference knitting; Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

notions stitch marker, tapestry needle, scrap yarn for holding stitches.
