Evoking the Medieval decorative tracings, this can be finished as either a headband/ earwarmer or completed as a hat. Knit flat until long enough to fit around the head comfortably, the crown stitches are picked up along one edge and worked in the round.

Known in Estonia (and Northern Europe) as “Patent Stitches”, these fascinating manipulated stitches are most certainly more complex to explain than to do. But, once you work through them just a very few times, they become ridiculously easy since you work the same four sts every two rows of the Patent Stitches while the Elongated stitch rib at either side (with garter selvedges) provides relief to what otherwise might even get TOO easy. These pattern stitches are even easier worked in the round if you decide to finish this as a hat.
